Title:  We’re Smarter Than This
Author: czarina_kitty
Pairing/character:  team
Rating:  G

Disclaimer: I do not own, or make any money from the use of, these characters.
Written for Torchwood Cliché Fest.  Trope named at the bottom.  At a stretch, this could be seen as character bashing, but I’d argue that at least half of all Torchwood episodes employed this trope.

“Anyone up for a game of basketball?” Jack asked, emerging from the archives.

“I thought the dinosaur ate the ball the last time we played,” Gwen said.

“She did,” Jack confirmed.  “But I just found this ball.  It was just sitting on a shelf in the McGuffin section and I thought ‘looks like a basketball.’  It even bounces,” Jack added with a grin.

“Is that safe?” Tosh asked, peering over the top of her glasses.

“An unlabeled item from the archives?  Why wouldn’t it be?  Besides, it’s slow today, what else are we going to do?” Jack asked with a grin, throwing the ball to Gwen.

“Oh, oh, oh.  I think we should all go down to the archives and push buttons on the devices we can’t identify.  You know, so we will know what they do if we ever need them,” Gwen said excitedly, passing the ball off to Owen.

“I’m going to go and autopsy that strange alien we brought in yesterday, wearing minimal protective gear and without bothering to isolate the atmosphere,” Owen replied, tossing the ball to Jack.

“That all sounds good.  But remember, if we get a call out we’re all going to split up before we have any idea what we’re dealing with.  Just so it won’t get all of us,” Jack added.

“Okay,” Ianto interrupted from the catwalk, not at all amused.  “Who took the idiot ball out of the archives?  Again?” As everyone turned and pointed at Jack, Ianto added, “Put it back in the containment box before anyone gets seriously hurt.”

Jack grinned and threw the ball at Ianto, who caught it easily and opened a small panel.  “Well, at least you had it turned off this time.”

That was genius. Absolutely hailarious. And yes, I think without this trope the writers wouldn't have had a show.

Thanks.
I read a review some where that said that the idiot ball was being passed back and forth so fast during the first season that it almost became impossible to keep track of.

LMAO! Especially as the ball wasn't even turned on =)

Sometimes, I think Ianto is the only one who shows any common sense. Not that he's completely perfect, but there's a reason he rolls his eyes a lot at the rest of the team.
