“I’m sorry.”

He’ll never get to say it, not to him, not to the one who really needs to hear it.    

He’ll never get the chance to tell him that his death meant something, that he saved the world with his sacrifice.

He’ll never get the chance to apologize.

All he can do is keep watching, refuse to avert his eyes, maintain eye contact with his grandson as he gives his life to save others.  He won’t look away until the end.  Steven deserves so much more than that.

It’s too little, too late, but it’s all he can do.

Aww I liked this when I read it on drabble_las, didn't know it was yours. The line about not averting his eyes really brought that image of Jack crying and watching right back into my mind, very powerful :'(
