Two Drabbles

Title:  Archery Practice

Ianto barely reacts as the arrow flies past, close enough for the fletching to tickle his ear.

“Sir, I thought we had agreed that you were not to play with the crossbow,” Ianto says, without looking up.

“I wanted to see if these new arrows really do fly straighter.”

“New arrows?” Ianto asks, pulling the projectile from where it had embedded in the wall.

“Carbon fiber shafts.  Lightweight, strong--” Jack stops short and gulps as he looks up to see Ianto in the door of his office, tapping the arrow menacingly against his palm.  “I’m in trouble, aren’t I?”

“What’s the problem?” Ianto asks, looking over Tosh’s shoulder at the computer screen.

“Momentum,” she replies.

“In what way?”

“It’s this time-lock, to protect the hub.  It would create a time bubble around this place, sort of freeze everything around us.”

“Sounds good.”

“But anything that is already moving when the time lock activates will just keep moving.  Momentum and inertia don’t just stop.”

“Ah,” says Ianto.  “How quickly would everything stop?”

“Instantaneously.”

“No problem then.  If you freeze an instant, an object can only be where it is, not moving to where it will be.”

“Zeno’s arrow?”

“Yep.”

“Brilliant.”

Really clever use of the challenge. I can just imagine Ianto stood there tapping the arrow in his palm. And I am reminded of the scene in Stolen Earth as the dalek is frozen - good old Tosh - saving them even after her death - she certainly did good.

Drool. Can we pleeeeeeease have a sequel to this? A longer-than-a-drabble sequence? Cos I feel it's incredibly important that we see Ianto dealing with the situation :D
