Summary: After Jack leaves, Ianto and Tosh have a chat.

Notes: Set between series 1 & 2.
It is a week after Jack left, when Ianto slips a note onto the saucer of Tosh’s teacup. Meet me outside is all that it says. Tosh watches as Ianto slips out of the Hub, unnoticed. She sits back to sip her tea, considering what excuse to give the others for leaving in the middle of the morning, but decides not to bother when she realizes that Gwen and Owen are arguing. Again. Or maybe it’s the same argument.
“They still at it?” Ianto asks as Tosh joins him overlooking the bay. It seems that Gwen and Owen have done nothing but argue since Jack left. Arguing over who should lead and who should follow, who has been at Torchwood longest versus who has the relevant experience, who did Jack trust and why did he leave. Arguments that raged hour after hour, day after day, unresolved.
“They really don’t have a clue what they’re fighting over,” Tosh replies, leaning against the railing and inhaling the sea air deeply.
“Nope,” Ianto agrees. “And we can’t tell them.”
“I’m not sure how much more of this I can take,” Tosh says, rolling her shoulders in an attempt to relieve some of the tension.
“It’ll be over soon,” Ianto says, as he begins to massage Tosh’s neck. “Owen will fold.”
“Ianto,” she says suddenly. “You have seniority over both of them, why don’t you take control? If we stick together…”
“It’s too high profile. I can’t take the risk of UNIT finding out about Lisa, even after all this time. But you could do it, if you like. I’d support you, help you however I can.”
“The less contact I have with UNIT the better, and without Jack here to protect me…”
“Yeah,” Ianto says with a wince, shaking his head. “Sorry. I forgot about that. Gwen’s the best option, then. Owen’s too dedicated to being a doctor to be an effective leader and I think he knows that on some level. Given the choice between saving a life and leading the battle charge, he’ll always stay with his patient. He’ll give in, Gwen will take over, and the rest of us can get on with our jobs.”
“Yeah. What worries me is that I really don’t understand her,” Tosh confides, turning to face Ianto, her back to the waterfront. “She helped open the rift, almost destroying the world, to get Rhys back, and then she ignores him for three days to sit with Jack. I don’t think she’s gone home in over a week.”
“She hasn’t, but then neither have any of the rest us, really,” Ianto says with a chuckle. His voice drops to a near whisper as he continues, “None of which isn’t what I wanted to speak with you about.”
“How are you, Ianto?” Tosh asks. “With Jack leaving like he did…”
“I’m fine. It had to happen sooner or later. And Jack will be back,” Ianto asserts. “As much as Gwen wants to believe he was taken, we both know he left with the Doctor. And that he’ll be back once he gets his answers. Until then… I have a few… let’s say, off the record projects, a few of Jack’s secrets that I’m helping conceal. I’m sure you have a few as well.”
Tosh smiles. “One or two, yes.”
“I may need you to cover for me from time to time, help divert resources and such. It might be difficult, there wasn’t any need to sneak around Jack, but we can’t tell Gwen…”
“Are you suggesting that we work together? Without telling those two? ”
“I’m suggesting that if they knew what we know, they wouldn’t be arguing over who gets to be in charge.”
“More likely they’d be fighting over who gets stuck being in command.”

Date: 2010-09-20 10:18 pm (UTC)I love the thought of Tosh and Ianto both knowing Jack had gone with the Doctor and working together to keep confidential things from the others while he's gone. Bet they don't even let on to each other exactly what they know, neither would break a confidence. They just carry on and run things from behind the scenes. =)
