Five Reasons Jack Harkness Wears Both Braces and a Belt
Rating: PG-13
Summary: What it says on the tin. Told in five 100 word drabbles.
Warnings: Suggestion of kinky sex
Disclaimer: I do not own, or make any money from the use of, these characters
Notes: This just sort of came to me last night and demanded to be written. I have no idea why.
1. They’re sexy.
As he struts across the room Jack can feel all eyes on him. Keeping his hands thrust deep in his pockets he knows the image he projects. Red braces smoothed over a deep blue shirt, subtly emphasize his broad shoulders and well defined pectorals. Shirtsleeves rolled to the elbow show off the tanned skin of his forearms. The slight creak of leather as his belt flexes with each step drawing the eye to his waist. Trousers pulled tight across his arse, and the slight tugging of fabric upwards, draw attention to his groin. Sex appeal personified. Not to be ignored.
2. They slow him down.
“Ah. I see I’m just in time,” the Doctor says, rounding the corner to find Jack pressing the Ambassador’s daughter back against the wall. Jack shrugs off his braces and tries to undo his belt with one hand, fumbling with the buckle in his haste.
“Good work, Jack,” the Doctor says jovially, “You found the source of the aphrodisiac spray and protected the virtue of this young lady.”
Jack looks dazed for a moment, then grins wolfishly.
“Of course,” says the Doctor, “if your clothes were any easier to remove, we would have had a diplomatic catastrophe on our hands.”
3. They can be useful.
“I have a plan,” Jack announces. “We use my braces to make a slingshot and my belt to make a snare trap. We shoot rocks, or whatever, at the guard until he comes over here to investigate. As soon as he steps inside the loop we make out of my belt, we tighten it up and knock him down. After that, it’s a simple matter of grabbing his keys and taking his clothes.”
“Why do we need to take his clothes?” Owen asks.
“Hey, this is my plan. If you don’t like it, come up with one of your own.”
4. He likes the way they feel.
It has been a long time since Jack has trusted anyone enough to willingly let them bind him. He has, now and again, ended up cuffed to a chair or manacled to a wall, but that hasn’t exactly been consensual. Still, he likes the feeling of being bound, being restricted. From the stiff leather cuff of his vortex manipulator always on his wrist, to the gentle tug of braces on his shoulders. From the slight pressure of his belt tightening around his waist, to the fabric of his undershirt plastered against his skin. The sensations serve to keep him grounded.
5. They keep his trousers up.
“Why wear both? Most people wear one or the other,” Ianto says, as he watches Jack unclipping his braces.
“If I just wore a belt, I couldn’t do this,” Jack growls, wrapping the braces around Ianto’s wrists and securing the ends to the ladder. “And if I only wore braces, I wouldn’t be able to whip you with my belt for asking such dumb questions.”
Ianto lolls his head back, watching as Jack slowly pulls the belt free of the loops and folds it over in his hands. Ianto licks his lips, then laughs hysterically as Jack’s trousers suddenly fall.

Oh my, I needed this! Everything else I've read today has been sad and depressing, so this has given me a much needed boost - especially the last one! I can just see Ianto laughing his head off and Jack with a bemused 'What just happened?' look on his face =D
Funny though, I always thought Jack wore the braces because they fit the era and the belt because the Webley has a belt holster! My brain obviously needs to stop thinking so logically - your reasons are far better!

Your reasoning is probably more to the point, but there are other holster options. (Based on what we saw of firearms training and use, however, I suspect no one really bothered to do any research on the subject.)
