Title: Where the Heart Is

Over time, he’d learned to protect himself from heartbreak.  Getting involved only lead to pain and the only thing worse than living forever, would be living in pain forever.

He refused to get close, kept his distance.  Always traveling, never putting down roots, never settling anywhere, always on the move.  Hopping from bed to bed, planet to planet, never waking up in the same place twice.

This time, when offered a room and companionship aboard the TARDIS, he refused.  It was too late for him.  He had learned:  if home is where the heart is, it’s safer to remain homeless.

OUCH!!! Right through my heart with that one, because it kills me that Jack walks away from the Doctor at that point. Brilliantly written, but seriously painful.

God, the idea of Jack being so far gone that he won't even go with the Doctor? Killed me. Very good, and angsty, and good.

I think Jack would at some point develop Reactive Attachment Disorder. And the Doctor may live a long time, but Jack will still outlive him.

Ouch! Poor Jack, but a very believable scenario, especially post-CoE. He let himself care too much for too many people, he just can't take losing anyone else. There has to be a limit to how much pain one heart can handle.
