Drabble: Faded

Title:  Faded
Author:  czarina_kitty
Characters: Ianto
Challenge: tw100 challenge #188--yellow
Rating:  PG

Notes: I do not own, or make any money from the use of, these characters.

It broke Ianto’s heart to find Jack’s tin box of photographs tucked away in a desk drawer.  It wasn’t being faced with the images of Jack’s previous lives and former lovers, that saddened him.  It wasn’t the knowledge that someday he would be nothing more than another face in the collection, or not even that.  What broke his heart was that despite the technology and archival techniques Jack had at his fingertips, the pictures were aged, cracked, and yellowed at the edges.  Despite holding onto these mementos, Jack had not felt them worthy of protection against the passage of time.

That was rather angst-ridden. I want to argue on Jack's behalf that maybe he has digital copies stored away, but the orginals have a memory association of their own that an archived photograph wouldn't.

Wow, really interesting interpretation of the memory-box. I've never heard it described like that before. (though I too hope Jack has some digital copies, lol!)

How sad!
but I also think that the paper aging, has a greater impact of memory: time passes and it shows on the paper / photo that are damaged

I love this take on the prompt, and what an astute and bittersweet observation to make about the photos.

I wonder how Jack would feel if Ianto borrowed them and made restored digital copies for him to have?

Just the way the archivist in Ianto would think - old things and memories matter to him, and he'd hate to see how neglected Jack's are.

Oh, ouch! I hadn't thought about it that way! Nice angle.
