“I don’t get it, Doc.  How were they able to hold the entire world hostage?”

“Surely you, Jack, of all people, understand the value of projecting a strong image.”

“But if we’d known…”

“Did you ever see them up close?  In the open?”

“No…”

“Just inside the tank, right?”

“Yeah.”

“And they spoke through the children or with a synthesizer?”

“Yes.”

“Classic deception—smoke and mirrors, really.  Like making shadow puppets.  Aim the light source correctly, stand back from the screen and voila:  big, scary alien.”

“But they’re not even a foot tall.  We could have just stepped on them.”
