            It was six months after he left Earth, a year after the 456, when the dreams began.  These were not the usual night terrors, flashbacks to deaths he had seen and caused, echoes of screams and dying confessions, that had woken him night after night for decades.  These were far older nightmares, visions of darkened streets and fiery explosions, shrill sirens of air raid warnings, men in uniform dead or injured.  These always ended with the singular memory of a little boy, lost and confused, looking for his mummy.  Hope in the form of nanogenes.  Immortality gleaned from his template.
